Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program. A spreadsheet is a computer software program that is used for storing, organizing and manipulating data. Spreadsheet programs were originally based on paper spreadsheets used for accounting. As such, the basic layout of computerized spreadsheets is the same as the paper ones.
The components of Microsoft Excel are cells, spreadsheets and workbooks. Workbooks contain spreadsheets and spreadsheets contain cells. Therefore, thousands of cells are in a spreadsheet and two or more spreadsheets make up a workbook. The features Microsoft Excel offers make it possible for the user to save time when calculating formulas, creating charts and graphs, and sharing and securing information.
Lets we create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
Step 1: First of all you install Microsoft Excel in your computer or device if you don’t have. Then open Microsoft Excel in your device, the windows looks like this:
Step 2- Now to create a new file, click on top-left ,named File with green cell. The windows becomes like this:
Step 3- Now find “New” keyword in the left of file menu and click to create new file. Some templates comes out in this section, here is some option like to open recent template, sample templates, blank workbook, new from existing and sample templates. To create new file double click on “Blank workbook”.
Step 4- In Microsoft Excel a cell is a letter combined with number. If you combine column A with row 3 then you get A3. Note that the cell which we clicked, black border comes around them and it shows that the cell is active. The active cell will have its column number and row number on top left. Now you insert data to that column.
Step 5- Now you are ready to insert data in cells. For example we insert “ID” in the column C and row 1 and the cell name becomes C1. You can see it in this figure:
Step 6- At the start we make simple spreadsheet. Entering numbers in D column. Not apply any formula yet just enter text and data in it.
Before this, you may take note about Undo feature of Microsoft Excel. The Undo option is for, if you make mistake. The Undo option is on the top-left in Microsoft Excel, its shape is left curved arrow.
Step-7 To change the text in the cell after entering the text, click in that cell and write which you want but previously all text will be removed. In the image below you can see formula bar. The Formula Bar is like a long text box that you can click inside and start typing.
To edit, click on cell which you want to edit and then click in the formula bar. In the cell C1, we change “ID” to “Student ID” for that click on cell C1 and then in the formula bar and change the text.
Step-8 In the figure, you see that there is a not enough space for the text. Some part of it seems to in column D. The solution is that to increase the size of cell C, for this:
Move your mouse up to start of column C and the pointer will become black. Move your mouse over the line that separates Column C and Column D, and the mouse pointer will change shape again like cross with arrows. When you see the new shape, hold down your left mouse button. Keep the left mouse button held down, and drag your cross to the right. Once you have all the text in the A column, let go of the left mouse button. The images below show the process in action.
